A new set of Home Assistant dashboard cards called S.tile has surfaced on the Home Assistant community forum, and its developer is recruiting testers. It is not a public release yet, so this is a “keep an eye on it” story rather than a “go install it” one.
What was announced
According to the forum post, S.tile is a collection of more than 235 pre-built tiles, with more still being added. The idea is a dashboard that is simple and pleasant for everyday use, but where a power user can flip a tile over to get more detail and control. The developer says it was built with help from Claude, and frames the goal as a dashboard the whole household will accept.
Tile types listed so far:
- Lights and light groups
- Media, including Sonos grouping and favourites
- Climate, sensors (door, window, motion, temperature, humidity, numbers) and weather
- Clock, timers and calendar
- Vacuum, people tracking, covers, alarm and locks
- Scenes and scripts, graphs, plugs, EV charger, sun and moon
- Energy, which reportedly accepts a copied Power Flow Plus config
Still to come, per the developer: appliances, network devices, custom tiles, collages, cars, docks, headers and a full panel card.
How to get in
Testing is by private message to the developer, who says they want only about three or four testers at this stage and will send a link to the file. They also mention possibly setting up a donation page to cover time and AI usage, while saying they do not intend to fully monetise it. No public download, repository or licence details were given, so there is nothing to add through a normal installer yet.
What owners are asking
The early replies raised a few practical questions. Here is what the thread does and does not settle.
- Do the tiles follow Home Assistant themes? The developer says the tiles reference themes, ship with default colours, and let you set your own colours, backgrounds, shadows and borders in the UI. One person pointed out that what they want is for tiles to follow whichever theme is selected in the user profile, and said that without it the card is a non-starter for them. The developer offered to look at a theme if sent one. So full theme-following is not confirmed.
- Can I use templates for icon, name, state and colour? Someone asked, and no direct yes came back. The developer said the project is not aimed at people who really want templating, and prioritises UI-based customisation for a click-and-add experience. Treat templating as unsupported until shown otherwise.
- Is AI-written code a concern? One reply criticised the use of AI for Home Assistant work. The developer did not respond to that point. With any early custom card, read what it needs and what it can access before you add it to your main instance.
What to check before you try it
If you install a custom dashboard card in a system other people rely on, a few habits apply:
- Trial it on a spare dashboard or a test instance, not the wall panel the household uses daily.
- Take a backup first, so removing it is painless.
- Check how it looks with your active theme, especially if you mix it with other cards.
- Check how it behaves on your actual tablets and phones, since screenshots in the post are of a desktop-size view.
Nothing here touches your Zigbee, Matter, Z-Wave or Thread devices. It only changes how existing entities are shown, so there is no radio or device compatibility to worry about. We have not used it, and we would wait for a public release, clearer theme behaviour and a visible update history before putting it on a client’s dashboard.
